A lawn that was green in spring but has turned dull, yellow, or straw-coloured through summer is one of the most visible and disheartening garden problems. The good news is that colour loss is often one of the fastest issues to address — iron sulphate applied to a yellowing lawn can produce visible colour change within 24–48 hours.
But the right fix depends on the right cause. Here's how to tell them apart.
Why Is My Lawn Yellow? Common Causes in UK Gardens
Iron Deficiency (Most Common)
Iron deficiency is the most frequent cause of yellowing in UK lawns. Grass needs iron to produce chlorophyll — the pigment responsible for green colour. Iron-deficient grass turns pale green, then yellow, often starting in the youngest leaves at the tips of blades.
UK soils can be iron-deficient for several reasons: high pH (above 7.0) locks iron into forms grass roots cannot absorb; waterlogged conditions reduce iron availability; and over-fertilisation with phosphorus can interfere with iron uptake.
Fix: liquid iron sulphate applied to the lawn addresses iron deficiency directly and rapidly. This is the fastest colour improvement available — most lawns show visible greening within 48 hours.
Drought Stress
UK summers, while typically wetter than continental Europe, can still produce dry spells sufficient to stress lawns. Drought-stressed grass turns yellow or straw-coloured as it enters survival mode, reducing active growth and chlorophyll production.
Important distinction: drought-yellowed lawns are usually dormant, not dead. Established UK lawns can recover from drought dormancy fully once rain returns.
Fix: in extended dry spells, deep, infrequent watering (once or twice per week, soaking to 10cm depth) is more effective than frequent shallow watering. Avoid cutting stressed grass short.
Nitrogen Deficiency
Nitrogen drives leafy green growth. A lawn consistently deprived of nitrogen turns progressively paler — first a lighter green, then yellow-green, then yellow — and growth slows significantly.
Fix: apply a nitrogen-containing lawn fertiliser. For yellow lawns, a liquid feed with iron produces faster visual results than granular fertiliser, which takes several weeks to show colour improvement.
Waterlogging and Anaerobic Conditions
Counterintuitively, too much water causes yellowing as well as too little. In waterlogged soil, grass roots are deprived of oxygen. Prolonged anaerobic conditions turn grass yellow and eventually kill it. Low spots in the lawn, clay soils, and areas with compaction beneath the surface are most vulnerable.
Fix: aerate affected areas and, if the problem is structural, consider top-dressing with horticultural sand to improve drainage long-term.
Fungal Disease
Several fungal diseases cause yellow patches or streaks in UK lawns — including fusarium patch, red thread, and rust. Fungal problems often appear after warm, wet weather and produce irregular yellow or tan patches rather than uniform yellowing.
Fix: improve air circulation by reducing thatch, avoid evening watering, and ensure the lawn isn't over-fertilised with nitrogen (which promotes fungal susceptibility). Fungicide treatments are available for severe cases.
Herbicide or Chemical Burn
Spilled fuel, overconcentrated fertiliser, or herbicide drift can all cause localised yellowing or browning. These patches are typically sharply defined and correspond to specific events.
Fix: water heavily to dilute any remaining chemical concentration. Affected areas may need overseeding once the soil has recovered.
Dog Urine
Dog urine creates yellow circular patches — typically with a darker green ring where the diluted nitrogen at the edges acts as fertiliser. The pattern is distinctive and repeating.
Fix: water immediately after incidents to dilute concentration. Established patches need overseeding once the burn has cleared.
How to Restore Colour to a Yellow Lawn — Fast
If your lawn is yellow from iron deficiency or general stress (the two most common causes), the fastest fix is:
- Apply liquid iron sulphate across the whole lawn
- Water in if rain isn't forecast within 24 hours
- Expect visible colour change in 24–48 hours
- Follow with a balanced lawn fertiliser 2–3 weeks later to support ongoing health
For yellowing combined with thinning or patchy coverage, a more complete renovation approach — addressing nutrition, seed density, and soil health together — produces longer-lasting results than colour treatment alone.
