Another UK heatwave, another lawn turning from green to straw in what feels like days. The honest answer is that you can't heatwave-proof a lawn overnight. But you can build real drought resilience into it, so the next stretch of 30°C days does far less damage. Here's what we recommend, and why it works.
Why heatwaves turn lawns brown in the first place
When temperatures spike and rain disappears, grass goes into self-preservation mode. It redirects energy away from leaf growth and down into its root system, slows itself right down, and eventually goes dormant to conserve whatever moisture it has left. That's the blue-grey-to-yellow colour change you're seeing: it isn't necessarily dead grass, it's dormant grass, prioritising root survival over looking good.
The problem is that most gardens aren't set up to help that root system cope. Compacted soil, the wrong feeding routine, and shallow, little-and-often watering all make heat stress worse, not better. The good news: all three are fixable before the next heatwave arrives.
Step 1: Aerate before the heat hits
Compacted soil is the enemy of a drought-resistant lawn. When soil is compacted, water runs off the surface instead of soaking down to the roots, and air and nutrients can't get through either. A lawn that's been aerated copes noticeably better with both drought and, at the other extreme, waterlogging.
Aeration simply means putting lots of small holes through the surface, letting air, water and nutrients reach further down into the soil. This encourages roots to grow deeper rather than staying shallow, and a deep root system is exactly what gets a lawn through a dry spell.
There are two ways to do it:
- Hollow tining – removes small plugs of soil and thatch, leaving proper channels behind. This is the method we'd recommend if your lawn is at all compacted or thatchy.
- Solid tining – simply pushes spikes into the ground. Quicker, but it compresses the soil slightly at the base of each hole, so it's better suited to lighter maintenance than serious drought-proofing.

Step 2: Skip the fertiliser during the heatwave itself
This one surprises people, but it matters: feeding a heat-stressed lawn with a standard fertiliser can do more harm than good. Fertiliser pushes a lawn to grow leaf, right when it's already struggling to conserve every drop of water it has. That extra demand on a plant that's already under stress can scorch the grass and damage the root system further.
That doesn't mean you should do nothing. A seaweed-based feed or bio-stimulant works differently: rather than forcing new growth, it helps the plant cope with stress and supports the root system directly. Step 3: Water deep, not often
Daily light watering feels like the responsible thing to do in a heatwave. It's also one of the most common mistakes we see. Short, frequent watering keeps moisture sitting near the surface, which trains roots to stay shallow rather than reaching down for water, and shallow-rooted grass is the first to burn out when the heat returns.
The better approach is longer, deeper, less frequent watering; enough to properly soak down into the root zone, not just dampen the top inch of soil. That deep watering is what encourages roots to grow further down, which is exactly the resilience you're trying to build.
Timing matters too. Water early in the morning where possible. It gives the lawn time to absorb moisture before the heat of the day evaporates it, and avoids water sitting on the blades in strong sun, which can scorch the grass. What to do once the heatwave breaks
Even with all three steps done properly, a hot enough summer will usually leave a lawn patchy in places: recovery from dormancy is rarely even, so you may see some areas bounce back green within days and others stay bare or thin for weeks.
