How to Aerate a Lawn UK: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Why lawn compaction happens and why it matters

Lawn aeration is the process of perforating the soil to relieve compaction, most often in the layer just beneath the surface where a struggling lawn shows no obvious symptoms until growth stalls. It builds up from ordinary use: foot traffic, mowing, kids or pets running the same paths, and clay-heavy soil compacts faster than sandy soil because its particles pack together more easily. Once the soil's compacted, roots can't push down into it either, so the grass ends up shallow-rooted and more vulnerable to drought and wear, which is often the real story behind a lawn that "just won't thicken up" no matter how much you feed it.

Aerating a lawn improves the movement of air and water among the grass roots by opening up the compacted layer, which is what actually helps a lawn withstand both drought and waterlogging rather than swinging between the two. That also supports deeper root growth and better nutrient uptake for healthy grass.

Signs your lawn needs aerating

A few checks tell you most of what you need to know. Push a screwdriver or garden fork into the soil: if it goes in easily, you're probably fine; if it takes real effort, the soil's compacted. Watch what happens after rain: water that pools and sits rather than soaking in within a few minutes is a strong signal of compaction. And feel the ground itself: hard, dense soil that doesn't give underfoot is usually a compacted lawn, especially along well-used paths, near gates, or wherever a trampoline or paddling pool sits for the summer. Focus first on those compacted areas. If there's also a thick, spongy layer of thatch sitting on top of the soil, that's a separate problem, scarifying deals with thatch, aeration deals with what's happening underneath it, and the two often need doing together in the same autumn.

When to aerate

The best time to aerate a lawn in the UK is during the growing season, in spring or autumn, with autumn (especially September to October) usually best for most lawns. The soil is also more likely to be workable, neither baked hard from summer nor waterlogged from winter rain, and moist soil is easier to penetrate. Spring is a workable second option if you've missed autumn, but avoid aerating during extreme summer heat or drought, when the stress of the process can do more harm than the compaction itself, and avoid it in winter when frozen or sodden ground makes the job pointless.

Choosing a method: spiking versus hollow-tining (core aeration)

There are two broad approaches, and which one you need depends on how bad the compaction actually is.

Solid spiking is the simplest method and enough for most domestic lawns. The RHS's own method is to push a garden fork in every 10 to 15cm, going down as deep as the tines will go. It's a form of spike aeration suited to light maintenance, but unlike core aeration it doesn't remove any soil, so spike aerators are less effective on heavy clay. It's manual, genuinely hard work on a larger lawn, and the usual advice for a bigger area is to concentrate on the parts that see the most wear rather than doing the whole lawn to the same standard. A mechanical spike aerator does the same job faster if you'd rather not do it by hand, and is worth hiring for a lawn much bigger than a typical garden. The drawback is that spiking can press the sides of the hole inward as it goes in, so it does less to relieve compaction long-term than a method that actually removes soil.

Hollow-tine aeration goes further: rather than just pushing a spike in, it removes small plugs of soil, leaving holes that stay open longer instead of closing straight back up. That makes it the better choice for heavily or severely compacted lawns, or heavy clay ground, where removing soil rather than just displacing it breaks up density more effectively over time. It's more disruptive to the lawn's appearance in the short term and usually only worth doing every few years rather than annually, reserved for lawns that are visibly struggling rather than done as routine maintenance.

For most gardens doing this for the first time, start with solid spiking, then step up to hollow-tining only if the lawn is still struggling afterwards.

How to aerate step by step

Mow the lawn a day or two beforehand so you're working with short, manageable grass rather than fighting through long growth. Water the lawn the day before if the soil's dry and hard; slightly moist soil is far easier to spike than baked-dry ground, though you don't want it waterlogged either. For smaller areas, a manual plugger is practical, while a wheeled or powered aerator suits larger spaces, and aerator shoes can help with light compaction on a lawn you're maintaining rather than rescuing.

Work systematically across the lawn in straight lines so you don't miss sections or double up on others, leaving roughly 10 to 15cm between holes and concentrating extra effort on paths, gateways and any area that gets disproportionate foot traffic. Push a fork or spike aerator to its full depth each time, aiming for the 10 to 15cm the RHS recommends rather than a token inch; if you're using a hollow-tine aerator or manual plugger instead, most remove soil plugs around 5 to 7cm deep, so go as deep as the tool allows. Deeper, even coverage matters more than a scatter of shallow holes.

What to do immediately after aerating

Once you've finished aerating, the open holes are the perfect opportunity to fix more than just compaction. Brushing a sand and soil top dressing into the holes improves drainage further and levels out any unevenness in the surface; on heavy soils it's especially useful, since it improves soil structure at the same time. How often to aerate

For ordinary lawns, aeration every 2–3 years is generally sufficient. Lawns that see heavier use, clay soil, or ongoing drainage problems are better served by aerating once or twice a year, in spring and autumn, until the underlying compaction is properly resolved. A new lawn, once it's had time to establish, may also benefit from more regular treatment early on.

Aeration on its own isn't a fix for everything

Aerating relieves compaction, but it's a different job from scarifying, and it doesn't replace feeding, mowing correctly, or dealing with an underlying drainage problem if one exists. If your lawn has been consistently waterlogged for years rather than just compacted, aeration helps, but you may also need to look at the garden's broader drainage.
